Fryderyk Chopin (1810-1849) – the most outstanding Polish composer and pianist, born in the village of Żelazowa Wola in the district of Sochaczew.
Fryderyk was the Chopins’ second child. He came into contact with music at a very early age. The first contact with the piano probably came at home during his early childhood.
The first compositions were not long in coming: polonaises, marches and variations. Initially written with his father’s help, they almost immediately brought him a reputation as a child prodigy. His musical talent developed incredibly quickly.
In 1826, Chopin began the next stage in his education. He enrolled at the Main School of Music attached to Warsaw University, which was run by Józef Elsner. A year later, Chopin composed his first two serious works:
- the Variations in B flat major, Op. 2
- the Sonata in C minor, Op. 4, dedicated to Elsner
Chopin lived during the partitions (1795 – 1918), when Poland was not on the map (123 years). That’s why his music is full of longing for freedom and a homeland.
The “Revolutionary Étude” was inspired by the 1831 Russian attack on Warsaw, during the November 1830-31 Uprising.
Chopin left Warsaw in late 1830 and travel to many countries in Europe among others Austria, Germany, Spain, England and France, where he often performed at concerts.
In 1848 he gave his last concert in Paris, enthusiastically received. He was sick with tuberculosis.
He passed away on 17 October 1849, at two o’clock in the morning.
“He was a native of Warsaw, a Pole by heart, and a citizen of the world” – obituary posted by Cyprian Kamil Norwid.
